Cards and Counting

 

 

Age - Appropriate: 2 ½ -4

              Mastery:  3 ½

 

Skill Preparation: 

        Before:  Sandpaper Numbers and rods

          After:  Advanced Math exercises, addition

 

Materials:   Three part tray, first part cards, second part coins, third part labels

 

Layout/Organization: pictured above

 

Purpose:

   Direct:  symbol/quantity matching, odd and even

  Indirect:  Symbol relation to quantity, concentration, coordination

 

Beginning:

1.  Invite one or two children who recognize written                       numerals to do this activity.

                2.  Place tray in upper/right of mat

                3.  Lay out each symbol/number correct sequence

4.  Say one and select a coin from the tray, place under one

5.  Go to next symbol, select two coins and place under two as shown and so on...

6.  After above is complete select labels from third part of tray and place in front of you

7.  Show each quantity as having a partner and not having a partner

8.  Take odd and place under no partner coin

9.  Take even and place under partner coin and so on...

 

Variation:  Can reverse game by laying out quantities then having child match the symbol, can go up to ten and higher

 

Points of Interest:  shiny gold coins, simplicity and order

 

Control of error:  teacher

 

Isolation of Difficulty:  labels are all the same background, clovers are all the same shape, coins are the same color

 

Vocabulary:  one, two, three, four, five, odd, even
