Home-Visitor's Handbook for the Head Start Home-Based Program Option


#1 High School Diploma and early childhood experience required. College education preferred. Must be sensitive, caring, nurturing and enjoy working with young families. Knowledge of community resources helpful. Excellent written and spoken English necessary. Preference for bilingual/bicultural, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole.  Salary: $14.00-$16.00/hr (35 hr/wk) Education: High school

Travel is required. Reliable transportation, valid MA driver’s license, auto insurance, registration and a safe driving record mandatory.


#2 Associates Degree with 24 units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development (ECE/CD), including core courses,plus 16 general education units, plus 3 administration units. Hold/qualify for Child Development Master Teacher Permit or higher. Proof of valid CA driver's license and minimum amount of liability insurance required by law. DMV H-6 printout required upon hire.  $147 daily merced ca


#3 Minimum of (24) units of Early Childhood Education-Child Development including core courses (Child Human Growth and Development; Child, Family and Community or Child and Family Relations; and Program Curriculum) or a California's Teacher Credential. Experience in home visiting or center based childhood programs. Knowledge of local community resources. Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards. Bilingual (Spanish/English). Demonstrated computer skills (Windows/Word and Excel). Capacity to problem solve, handle crisis, and work with low-income families in a human service setting. Approach to working with families that is empathic, nonjudgmental, respectful, and professional. Willingness to work primarily in home of families in residing in high-risk communities. Flexibility with respect to time and days able to work as well as to works tasks. Current CA driver's license, own transportation and insurance.

#4 Qualifications Include:
Two to Three years experience in Early Childhood, social services, or a family support program. Training in infant/toddler development required. Certificate in Parents as Teachers national curriculum. Demonstrated experience providing parent education to families.

Other skills and abilities required of the successful candidate:
• Knowledge of community resources.
• Proficient writing and record-keeping skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
